I've always wanted to make an album like this. An album based on the heroes of my youth. Based on a time when the protagonists were still heroes and albums were written for eternity. There were bands like ZZ Top or Led Zeppelin. There were guitarists like Eric Clapton, Eddy Van Halen or Jeff Beck. All of these artists always have based their rock on the blues and rock 'n roll. I've always seen and heard a big difference to pure metal music.
When I was young I was also very interested in electronic music, jazz, funk and hip hop.
I taught myself scratching and worked live and in studios for many years with artists and bands like Trance Groove, the Unknown Cases and Klaus Doldinger.
But even after decades of making music with a wide variety of techniques, instruments and styles, I still have this desire for my own guitar rock album never buried.
After my older brother died in 2011, I inherited his old USA Fender Stratocaster.
A gem, but in a rather deplorable condition. Over many years no one seemed to have taken care of it anymore. So I put it in the hands of my favorite instrument maker and had it rebuilt from the ground up.
In the following time I played it more and more often. I also got out my own guitars and wrote quite a few songs in my home studio over the years. I simply played the basses for the demos myself and programmed the drums at great expense.
At some point I would publish all this, I said to myself.
And then it came. The PANDEMIC!
Standstill in the music business. Endless free time.
So instead of grieving, I pulled out a number of compositions and demos that I had made and collected over the years and made a selection of songs. Now the question arose: “Who should accompany me? Who is drumming? Who should play the bass?“ I simply remembered the best musicians from my contact list.
First there is my friend Andy Zingsem. A great guy and a great entertainer. He knew right away how to put my ideas into lyrics and pushed things a long way with his singing and his coolness.
I had worked with bassist Raoul Walton (Roachford, Belfegore, Kunze, Mousse T) back in the '90s, and I knew he would be hooked on the project.
Now that some drummers didn't want to (or couldn't) meet my requirements, I finally decided on Jan Wienströer (Harald-Schmidt-Show, Wolf Mahn). A decision I didn’t regret. He turned out to be a real animal on the drums in the studio. Nothing was too fast or too complicated for him.
So I rented us a place in the Düsseldorf studio 3rd place and we got started.
In my opinion, the result can be heard and to this day it fills me with great joy and a little pride.
Punch and Judy Land is an album to have fun with! It tells stories about sex, drugs and rock 'n roll. It tells of dreams, of lust and greed, of addiction and longing, but also of hardship and the everyday stories of life and the music business.
But now listen for yourself. Immerse yourself in the times of ZZ-Top, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Van Halen. I wish you a lot of fun on a journey to a time when the music industry still consisted of heroes and albums were produced for eternity.
